Anthropogenic materials such as containers, bins, disposable packaging etc. are embedding themselves into our geologic record as a layer of plastic sediment and hybrid plastiglomerate rock. I envision my work as processed-based art which further imagines a future geologic narrative that includes fossilized plastic waste. My studio practice involves salvaging recycled and discarded plastic containers, and reviving them as ready-made moulds that I use to produce multiple casts that present themselves as relief sculptures. The casts replicate the subtle industrial contours of the plastic waste they are derived from, and are punctuated by instances of erosion. My pigment selection reflects natural mineral colours found in earthly materials such as coal, marble, sulphur and lapis lazuli. Both pigment and embedded sites of erosion allude to the earth’s mineral layers and its geologic record. For me, the casts propose a future scenario about our environment and the kind of trace-evidence that will remain after a prolonged period of plastic waste. It is conceivable that our disposable, non-biodegradable containers will fossilize over time creating strange geological forms in the shapes of industrial mass-production. Diptych in Lapis was cast from plastic garbage that I found in my neighbour's recycling bin - I believe the form might be the base of a plastic toy that was mass-produced, used for a time, and then discarded. When making a sculpture I have only a general sense of where I’d like to end up and then as I create, I am guided by my own body sensations and feelings on what it is like to live in my white, she/they body in this world. Through the work I explore how my lived experiences connect or dis-connect with the encoded and embedded messages about identity that I find in the objects, symbols and visual language that surrounds me. When creating "Heart Claw," I began the process by taking a previously made wall sculpture and pivoting it as the base for the new sculpture. The ceramic centerpiece of "Heart Claw" is from a series of wall sculptures that I made in 2018 that are flowers, caves, crevices all in one. They also reference biologically female anatomy, as well as the psychological states of receiving, of retreating, of waiting. Amidst the cluster of surrounding objects and forms, these sculptures turn traditionally feminized and often disregarded or misunderstood states into ones of poise and power. For "Heart Claw" I took that ceramic form and sculptural vocabulary and pivoted it to the horizontal plane. I was thinking a lot at the time about how many of the body sensations that I was experiencing felt like a cage or claw around my heart. Often my sculptures have spindly, precarious legs pointing down, and for "Heart Claw" I reoriented these to become spindly, hairy, claw-like arms reaching up. The broom bristles used as hairs were ways for me to complicate feminine visual language while also referencing my own hairy body and legs. An Iceberg Between the Shoulder Blades (Burdens) 2015nylon stockings, cocktail straws, rice, pillow stuffing, lace camisole, plaster, clay12" x 14" x 14"$2,560"An Iceberg Between the Shoulder Blades (Burdens)" is from Stein's 2015 solo exhibition "Puzzling Margins," which was a playful interrogation of feminine stereotypes that stretched gendered boundaries to their breaking points, making way for a new conversation about female survival in the US today.This sculpture is a part of a series where Stein dissects and reconstructs household accoutrements into scientific and sexualized forms, transforming implements of domesticity into startling otherworldly creatures that refer to plant and sea life, geological activity, reproductive organs, and genitalia. Alienizing these associations through repetitious processes that reference “women’s work,” she recasts mundane objects found on the shelves of America’s chain retail stores, such as bath mats, imperishable food items, and sponges, into fused anomalies that collapse the space between comfort and threat. These sculptures wrangle with the anxiety of anatomical bounds while simultaneously stripping the body of its margins and its gender conformities, prodding the viewer with distorted effigies that are both inviting and repulsive.The title "An Iceberg Between the Shoulder Blades (Burdens)" references Mary Oliver’s poem, "When Death Comes," writing that gives rise to one’s anxiety of a life unrealized. The anatomy of "(Burdens)" is a cast of Stein's neck resting atop fickle limbs, but this work is soft, billowing, and warm. Its figure envelopes a cluster of rice-filled pouches made from nylon stockings and leans subtly forward in a sheltering stance, simulating the way a mother might gently guide the shuffling feet of her brood. I did not expect to follow that pattern until I hit a whitetail buck with my Honda Civic in November of 2022. By January of 2023, I was still haunted enough by that moment to be sketching the deer to transfer its image onto lithographic limestone. The reductive lithographic process, also called manière noire, involves covering a limestone matrix in an even layer of dark greasy material, then using a knife to scratch the stone clean where light areas are desired. The flat stone, when processed for printing, holds ink in the areas where grease remains. I spent months carefully scraping each hair of the deer as a contemplation of the things I could control and the things I could not: remembering the hunters I chose not to join, my car’s repairs, and the delicate chemical process I was undertaking that could reject my image altogether. By horrible coincidence, on my first pass through the printing press, my stone cracked along the portion of my image where the real deer itself had been hit. It crumbled to pieces along the injury I’d spent so long drawing, and rendered the two remaining halves of my matrix impossible to print by themselves. I got into my car with its brand-new fender, hood, and windshield, and drove to the hardware store. I returned with a ratchet-strap to force the stone pieces together, and was able to print an entire edition cleanly, despite a portion of the deer’s body missing. Typically, when a lithograph is complete, a printmaker will grind a layer of stone off the matrix’s surface to reveal fresh limestone for a new image. After the debacle this stone had endured, I decided the deer would be its final print. For the second and third layers, I carved a block of wood: rendering first the speedometer on my car, then outlines of my father, his father, and his grandfather hunting through the years. I also used carved layers to fill in the lost area on the body of the deer, and to emphasize the contrast between the detail lithography can provide and the expressiveness of woodcut. The pattern was separated into 4 layers; Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black (CMYK). These were then screen printed onto muslin, sewn together, and stuffed with brown paper. My original idea for this project was to utilize images of cooking utensils.&nbsp; I had decided that I wanted these to be shown “in use” . This meant that I needed to cook something to create a mess to photograph. I decided to make Welsh Cakes. They are a Welsh baked good that are a cross between a biscuit and a pancake. I made them with my Grandmother growing up. However, after completing the baking process&nbsp; and reviewing my photos, I realized that I was most interested in the images of the final product. Looking at the pile of cakes on the plate, I was immediately drawn to the texture. That’s how I ended up with the piece you are seeing today! I began photographing other textures that caught my eye in the food I was cooking. I ended up with the three patterns shown above; Welsh Cakes, pasta, and coconut chicken soup. I was most interested in the effect that each pattern would have on one another. They needed to layer together and become a little overwhelming. With the final piece, I’m not sure if this makes me really hungry or super full!!&nbsp; This piece was featured in Vacant Museum’s virtual exhibition, Imprints: Past and Present! This was one of my first real explorations with artist’s books. For this project, I wanted to recreate the magazines/ads you get for hardware stores. As a women it felt pretty good to be making this! I drew all of the items by hand and used found text and screenshots for the words. The descriptions don’t match the images. This was on purpose.The book was kettle stitched together with thread. The name of the store is made up, the cover design is based off of a real advertisement. Using my sketchbook and a sharp memory, I recorded every app I opened and what time I opened them for a 24 hour period. Each app was assigned a color. One line of crochet = 1 minute of the day.
